Sydney Mines
Cape Breton · Canada
A small waterside town in Cape Breton with a notable concentration of historic churches, Sydney Mines was founded in 1784 and built on coal. Its steel plant, constructed in 1902 by the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Company, combined with a neighbouring facility to produce more than half of Canada's steel during World War I. Mining and steelmaking have since ceased, leaving a community shaped by that industrial past.
