Veszprém
Veszprém · Hungary
Known as the "city of queens" after being gifted to Queen Gisela by King Stephen I, Veszprém is one of Hungary's oldest cities, with roots stretching back to the Hungarian conquest and a castle quarter that survived the Second World War largely intact. It became Hungary's first episcopal seat in 1009 and held the title of European Capital of Culture in 2023. The walkable centre has a concentration of historic churches, a lively food-and-drink scene, and sits a short distance from Lake Balaton.
