Bytom
Poland
One of the oldest cities in Upper Silesia, Bytom has a walkable centre with a concentration of historic churches, cafés, and restaurants, and is home to the Silesian Opera and the Upper Silesian Museum. Part of the Tarnowskie Góry Lead-Silver-Zinc Mine — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — falls within the city. Bytom also carries a layered industrial and political history, from its Piast dynasty origins through Prussian and German rule to postwar heavy-industry development, traces of which remain visible across the urban landscape.
