Chinchero

Peru

Chinchero, a highland town in Peru's Urubamba province, sits high in the mountains above Cusco and holds a declared archaeological park built over Inca-era palace ruins — the colonial church that now stands on those foundations makes the layering of histories visible in a single site. The town is also the birthplace of Mateo Pumacahua, a leader of the 1814 Cusco Rebellion, and its monumental zone has been recognized as a Peruvian historic heritage site since 1972.
