Maras
Peru
Maras, a high-altitude town in Peru's Sacred Valley of the Incas, is known for its salt evaporation ponds that have been worked since Inca times. Spread across a canyon descending toward the Urubamba River, the ponds number in the thousands and are still maintained by local families today. The town sits in the wider Cusco region, ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites, and serves as the district capital at considerable elevation on what was once a plateau.
