Barikot, on the Swat River in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, sits above the ruins of the ancient city of Bazira, captured by Alexander the Great and inhabited since around 1700 BC. Italian archaeologists have been excavating the site since 1984. The town serves as the entrance to the central Swat Valley, a short drive from Mingora.
