Malakand
Pakistan
Malakand Pass, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is the mountain gateway connecting Peshawar and the lowland districts of Charsadda to the northern valleys of Swat, Dir, and Chitral. The colonial-era Swat Canal descends through the pass, channelling water from the Swat River toward the plains around Mardan. At the top of the pass, Malakand Fort stands guard, while a Hindu Shahi fort rises above the bazaar of Batkhela below. The wider region sits within reach of several UNESCO World Heritage sites.
