Kudowa-Zdrój
Poland
One of Europe's oldest spa towns, Kudowa-Zdrój sits in the foothills of the Table Mountains on Poland's southwestern border with the Czech Republic, where it has long treated heart and circulatory conditions. Its downtown park, styled on 17th-century revival design, centres on a mineral water pump room. The town's most arresting site is the Chapel of Skulls in the Czermna district, an ossuary holding the remains of thousands — one of very few of its kind in Europe. The Basilica of Wambierzyce, known as "Silesian Jerusalem," is a major Catholic pilgrimage site nearby.
