This rural municipality in Åland, Finland's autonomous Swedish-speaking archipelago territory, Lemland is split into two distinct parts: the large Lemland island in the southeast of mainland Åland, and a chain of compact islands linked by bridges and causeways south of Mariehamn. The Lemström Canal, cut in 1882, separates Åland's main island from the Lemland peninsula. Historically a maritime hub given its position in the Baltic Sea, the municipality is within walking distance of water throughout.
