Vardoe
Åland Islands
Vårdö, a pocket-sized island municipality in Åland, sits on the historic post route that once connected Stockholm to Turku — a dangerous water-and-road crossing that local residents maintained for over 300 years, from 1638 to 1910, at the cost of many lives. A memorial on the shore at Hullvik marks those who drowned on the journey. The municipality is also the birthplace of two Finnish authors, Sally Salminen and Anni Blomqvist, the latter of whom spent her entire life on the island of Simskäla.
