Mit Ghamr
Egypt
Mit Ghamr, on the eastern bank of the Nile's Damietta branch in Egypt's Dakahlia Governorate, is the country's dominant centre for aluminium production, particularly aluminium utensils. The city also carries a layered history: a Sufi centre during the Mamluk era, a site of resistance to French and British occupation, and one of the cities that declared independence during the 1919 Egyptian revolution — an episode known as the Sultanate of Mit Ghamr. It is credited as the birthplace of the first savings bank in the Middle East and the first modern Islamic bank in the world.
