Banha sits on the east bank of the Damietta Branch of the Nile, forming a near-peninsula where water wraps around three sides of the city. The capital of Qalyubiyya Governorate in the Nile Delta, it is known for traditional ceramics and textiles, agricultural produce including cotton and sugarcane, and locally produced honey. Founded in 1850, it also serves as a rail hub between Cairo and cities of the Nile Delta.
