Founded in 1144 by the Count of Toulouse, Montauban is a reddish-brick town on the Tarn river in southern France, known as the birthplace of the 19th-century painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle. Classified in France's Towns and Lands of Art and History network since 2015, it has a walkable centre with a strong food-and-drink scene and sits at the confluence of the Tarn and Tescou rivers, with the wider Occitanie region ringed by UNESCO heritage.
