Montefalco
Perugia · Italy
Wine country defines this small Umbrian hill town, which anchors the production zone for Sagrantino di Montefalco and Montefalco Rosso — both built around the highly localized Sagrantino grape. The former church that now houses the town museum contains a fresco cycle on the life of St. Francis painted by Florentine artist Benozzo Gozzoli between 1450 and 1452. For its size, Montefalco has a solid spread of cafés, restaurants, and historic churches, and sits south of Assisi and north of Spoleto in a region ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites.
