Town in Saxony-Anhalt at the southeastern edge of the Harz mountains, Sangerhausen served for several centuries as a centre of non-ferrous metal mining — copper and silver — until 1990, giving it an industrial heritage alongside its walkable centre. The districts of Grillenberg and Wippra are recognised recreation areas, and the wider region is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites.
