This Cairo district on the east bank of the Nile with a dense café and restaurant scene and an unusual concentration of churches, Maadi is popular with expatriates and home to many embassies, international schools, and sporting clubs. A waterfront promenade runs along the Nile, and the Egyptian Geological Museum is based here. Old Maadi is considered one of Cairo's most upscale residential neighbourhoods, with origins tracing to the era of Khedive Ismail.
