Founded in 2000 to ease the pressure on Greater Cairo, New Cairo is a planned satellite city on the eastern arc of the capital, built around gated communities, private universities, international schools, and corporate headquarters. Its desert elevation gives it a noticeably cooler climate than central Cairo. The wider region holds UNESCO World Heritage sites, and the city sits within reach of both the Red Sea coast and the Eastern Desert highlands.
