Grindavik

Iceland

This tiny fishing town on Iceland's Southern Peninsula, Grindavík sits close to the Blue Lagoon and the Reykjanes Geopark, which has its headquarters here. The town has been continuously settled since before 934 and built its identity around fishing and saltfish processing — the Kvika cultural centre holds an exhibition on Iceland's saltfish history. Since late 2023, the town has experienced repeated volcanic eruptions from the Sundhnúkur crater row, with lava destroying some buildings and triggering multiple evacuations.
