This southern district of Cairo on the Nile, Helwan has roots stretching back to ancient Egyptian times and was historically known for its sulphur springs, which once gave it a reputation as a spa destination. The area has passed through Pharaonic, Roman, and Islamic periods, and sits within a wider region ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites. It was briefly designated a separate city and governorate capital between 2008 and 2011 before being reincorporated into Cairo.
