Kökar
Åland Islands
A small island municipality in the south-eastern Åland archipelago, Kökar sits at the water's edge and carries a long seafaring history. The Nordic pilgrimage route St. Olav Waterway passes through, and the islands hold prehistoric remnants. The landscape is unusual for Finland — broadleaf forests rather than pine, with rare plants including the European yew. Reachable by ferry from Åland's main island or the Finnish mainland, it also has a nature reserve and was the birthplace of Finnish author Ulla-Lena Lundberg.
