Stalowa Wola
Poland
Built from scratch in the late 1930s to house workers of the Huta Stalowa Wola steelworks, this planned city in southeastern Poland carries an unusually coherent modernist character. Its name translates as "Steel Will," a nod to its industrial origins. The walkable centre has a solid café and restaurant scene, and the city sits near the confluence of the Vistula and San rivers, with UNESCO World Heritage sites in the wider Subcarpathian region.
